Who is Dr. Janie?
My journey to opening this private practice is a bit of a long story but it does let you know my background and the amount of experience I bring to caring for your child.
I began my nursing career in 1977 when I graduated with an Associate Degree in Nursing from Memphis State University. I worked at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, knowing right away that I wanted to work with children.
I moved to California in the 1980’s, met my husband in San Francisco and we moved to Ashland, OR. I had a wonderful manager who encouraged me to return to school to get a Bachelor of Science degree, which I did in 1991. While completing my degree I was the manager of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit in Medford, OR. Working with fragile newborns and families under the unbelievable stress of their new child being early and very ill was difficult but very rewarding as we saw many children survive and go home with their parents.
In 1991 we moved to Portland, bought a home, and once again I went back to school after an incredible physician I worked with encouraged me to become a clinician. He pushed me towards medical school but my philosophy and heart belong in the nursing profession. I graduated with a Master’s of Science in Nursing as a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner in the year 2000. Since then I have worked in a private practice with pediatricians and most recently in one of the Portland children’s hospitals taking care of children after major surgery.
The nursing profession’s highest degree of education has been a PhD with a research focus but as I have been, and always will be, a clinical care-giver, I wanted a clinical doctorate. I am proud to say I graduated in the first class to receive the clinical doctorate degree, the Doctor of Nursing Practice, DNP, in June 2009.
Whew, long story, not so short but I have many years of experience working with children and their families. I bring that experience, warmth and caring to Rose City Pediatrics. Feel free to schedule an appointment to meet myself and my staff, see our facilities and get to know Southeast Portland’s newest addition to caring for children.
